Hot foil printing, also known as hot stamping or foil stamping, is a printing method that uses heat, pressure, and metallic or pigmented foil to create a shiny and decorative design on various surfaces.
This process is commonly used for adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to items such as invitations, business cards, book covers, packaging, and promotional materials.
Design Preparation:
A design or text is created in a vector format, often using graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW.
Creation of a Foiling Die:
Depending on the material used, the design is then engraved or chemically etched onto a metal plate, creating a raised image that will transfer the foil onto the printing surface.
Foil Selection:
Metallic or pigmented foils are available in various colors and finishes, such as gold, silver, holographic, matte, or glossy. The foil is typically a thin layer adhered to a backing film
.
Foiling Press Setup:
The newly created foiling die is mounted on the foil stamping press along with the chosen foil and manually aligned with the print bed so the foil stamps on the correct position when the item to be printed is hand-fed into the press. The machine has a heated plate that activates the foil, making it adhere to the printing surface.
Application of Heat and Pressure:
The item to be printed is placed on the machine's bed, and the foil is positioned over the designated area. The press is closed, applying heat and pressure to transfer the design through the foil onto the surface. The heat activates the adhesive on the back of the foil, causing it to stick to the substrate.
Finished Product:
Once the foil has been transferred, the item is removed from the press, leaving the stamped design on the surface.
Hot foil printing is popular for its ability to create eye-catching and luxurious designs, enhancing the visual appeal of printed materials. It's commonly used in the production of high-end packaging, luxury goods, and various printed items where a premium and distinctive appearance is desired.
